An UMRI Pump Priming project has been funded to support exploratory collaborations between researchers in the Faculty of Humanities and those in the School of Computer Science. These explorations aim to grow existing Digital Humanities activities through collaborative partnerships between the Faculty of Humanities and the School of Computer Science.
The project will fund up to five seven-week mini-projects to be undertaken by Computer Science vacation students in June and July 2016.
We will be looking to recruit up to five students to work on the projects in June and July. Work will start around the end of term and will last up to seven weeks. If you are interested in being considered for a position on one of these projects, please contact Sean Bechhofer. Note that the details of projects will not be known until April or May, but you can assume that the projects are likely to require good development skills and an ability to work independently.
Ideas for mini-project proposals should be sent to umri-dh-cs-steering@listserv.manchester.ac.uk by the 19th February, 2016. Proposals should be no more than a single page (A4, 11pt), and identify:
We expect that mini-project proposals will focus on a practical task, for example data cleaning, analysis and visualisation of a data set. The mini-projects will be undertaken by Year 2 (or possibly Year 3) students. Thus we do not necessarily expect that the mini-projects will themselves tackle key research issues. The intention is rather that they will be used to instigate collaboration between Humanities and Computer Science researchers. Proposals are welcome from academic staff and PDRAs.

Project proposals will be evaluated at a workshop in the School of Computer Science on March 10th, 14:00---17:00. Project proposers will be invited to attend along with School of Computer Science researchers. Peer review during the workshop will help prioritise proposals in terms of their feasibility, technical requirements and availability/interest of appropriate staff. Successful project ideas will involve supervisors from both Humanities and Computer Science, with CS providing guidance and mentoring for the project students.
Projects will run from mid-June to end July 2016. Each project will be expected to produce a short final report in August along with a poster and blog post for the DH@Manchester Gallery and Computer Science web sites.
